At that point we had three of four people in the water and we were all communicating and looking out for it. “If we had seen the white shark first we would have evaluated the situation more but it was docile and not aggressive. “I didn’t get the same level of surprise they did, being in the water and the white shark showing up,” Mohler recalled. “There's probably been under a dozen that have been accurately spotted in Hawaii,” said Mohler, who was notified about the occurrence unfolding and rushed to the scene.
Strangely, they disappeared from the carcass and a large great white shark appeared out of the depths to feed. Tiger sharks were steadily consuming the carcass. Upon arrival, the divers took to the open water, nothing between them and the sharks. Meanwhile, Jeffries, along with fellow diver and marine biologist Andrew Gray and boat captain Danny Roberts decided to travel the eight miles off shore where the Department of Land and Natural Resources towed the rotting carcass. The next day, Mohler was scuba diving with another group of friends at a purposely-sunken Navy vessel, which was about a 45-minute boat ride from the whale carcass. Once in Hawaii, Mohler met his girlfriend, Kimberly Jeffries, who is a professional dive instructor and award-winning photographer. Mohler, a 2007 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School and alum of Shippensburg University, moved to the Hawaiian Islands in 2011 to pursue a civilian career with the Army as a civilian and now works for the General Services Administration. The experience landed him on the National Geographic SharkFest special "World's Biggest Great White?" which aired on Sunday, July 21. Ocean Ramsey, one of the divers who swam with the shark, said she believes the animal is at least 50 years old and weighs an estimated 2.5 tons.
